Nigeria has lost some of its market share in Europe , its biggest regional market , as crude oil exports from the United States penetrate more destinations.<br />
The US had in December 2015 removed the 40 -year -old restrictions on its crude exports following the rapid growth of its oil production from 2013 to 2015.<br />
The US Energy Information Administration said on Tuesday that the country exported crude oil to 26 different countries in 2016 , compared with 10 countries the previous year .<br />
Among the countries were buyers of Nigeria crude including Netherlands, China, Italy , the United Kingdom, Colombia , Singapore , Peru , France and Spain.<br />
The US crude oil exports averaged 520, 000 barrels per day in 2016 , 55, 000 bpd or 12 per cent above the 2015 level , despite a year - over-year decline in domestic crude oil production , the EIA said .<br />
According to the agency , in 2015, 92 per cent of the US crude oil exports went to Canada , which was exempt from the US crude oil export restrictions . After restrictions were lifted , Canada remained the top destination but received only 58 per cent of the US crude exports in 2016 .<br />
The EIA said , “Aside from Canada , European destinations such as the Netherlands, Italy , the United Kingdom , and France rank high on the list of the US crude oil export destinations.<br />
“The second- largest regional destination is Asia , including China, Korea , Singapore , and Japan . In 2016, the United States exported to eight different Central and South American destinations, including Curacao, Colombia , and Peru .”<br />
The Netherlands, which is one of the biggest European buyers of Nigerian crude , received 38 ,000 bpd of the US crude oil in 2016 , making it the second-largest destination after Canada.<br />
The country ’s monthly import of Nigerian crude oil plunged to an average of 3. 7 million barrels last year , up from 9 .1 million barrels in 2015, data from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation showed .<br />
Italy bought 23, 000 bpd of the US crude oil; China imported 22 ,000 bpd , while the UK and Colombia purchased 17 , 000 bpd and 9 ,000 bpd , respectively .<br />
Singapore received 11, 000 bpd of the US crude oil; Peru , 7 , 000 bpd ; France , 7 , 000 and Spain bought 4 ,000 bpd , the EIA data indicated .<br />
Spain saw its monthly import of Nigerian crude fall to an average of 4 . 7 million barrels in 2016 from 6. 1 million barrels , while that of France averaged 3. 4 million barrels compared to 4 . 1 million barrels in 2015, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation ’s data showed .<br />
According to the EIA, several factors appear to have contributed to the rise in the US crude oil exports in 2016.<br />
It said increased crude oil imports in 2016 substituted for some domestic crude oil at the US refineries, allowing higher exports despite lower US production and increased refinery runs.<br />
Low tanker rates for most of 2016 helped to narrow the price spread needed to allow for an economically attractive trade between the US and overseas markets .<br />
“With the average daily volume of crude imports more than 12 times the average daily volume of crude exports, many tankers were available for ‘back-haul ’ voyages at rates significantly below regular tanker rates , likely further reducing the cost of reaching export markets, ” the EIA said .<br />
Meanwhile , Nigeria ’s crude oil exports are set to rise to 1.66 million bpd in May , according to a loading programme compiled by Reuters on Tuesday .<br />
The country’ s crude oil programme for the month is up from April ’s revised loadings and puts Nigeria just above Angola’s planned exports of 1.61 million bpd in May .<br />
While Nigeria had consistently been Africa ’ s largest oil exporter , its loadings have fallen below those of Angola several times over the past year as it dealt with militant attacks on oil infrastructure in the Niger Delta .<br />
The increase to 54 May cargoes from 52 in April , or 1.61 million bpd , came in part from rising exports of Bonga and Antan , both of which were hit earlier in the year for scheduled maintenance .

The Federal Road Safety Corps says it impounded over 5, 000 vehicles in Ogun State in two months for not having speed limiters.<br />
The Ogun State Sector Commander , FRSC , Mr. Clement Oladele, said this on Tuesday at an event marking the 10th Anniversary of the Temidayo Ogan Child Safety and Support ( TOCSS) Foundation.<br />
The event was also used to premiere a new movie on road safety by the foundation , entitled , ‘ Amigas’ .<br />
Oladele said the corps arrested an average of 100 commercial vehicles per day since February 1, 2017 when it started the speed limiter enforcement .<br />
He said , “From February 1, the Federal Government ordered that if you don ’t have the speed limiter, it has become an offence. Even though it is an offence for all vehicles, either private or commercial , we decided to start with commercial vehicles .<br />
“We arrest an average of 100 vehicles per day. While we allow some of them to pay the fine of N3,000 , we insist that others are charged to court . Other time, we seize your vehicle and insist that you fix the speed limiter.”<br />
Oladele noted that accident rate had gone down in the country because of the proactiveness of the corps , saying about 10, 000 road crashes were recorded in 2016, out of which about 6 ,000 people died .<br />
The Executive Director of TOCSS Foundation, Temidayo Ogan , charged parents to ensure their children were always strapped to seat belts while driving , adding that it was what saved her and her child 10 years ago when they had an accident .<br />
She said the experience motivated her to start the foundation in order to create awareness on the need to protect families from harm through obedience to traffic rules .

A massive gold coin worth millions of dollars, which is listed in the Guinness Book of Records for its purity of 999.99/1000 gold vanished from a museum in the middle of the night, police in Germany announced Monday, saying a group of thieves stole the 221-pound currency before police could arrive, according to the Bode Museum in Berlin, which housed the coin.<br />
The daring thieves allegedly snuck in through a window around 3:30 a.m. Monday, broke into a cabinet holding the "Big Maple Leaf" coin, stole the coin and escaped, police spokesman Stefen Petersen said.<br />
While Police searched the area, they found a ladder by nearby train tracks.<br />
The 1.18-inch-thick coin, with a diameter of 20.9 inches, has a face value of 1 million Canadian dollars, or $750,000.<br />
By weight alone, however, it would be worth almost $4.5 million at market prices. Petersen would not comment on whether authorities had surveillance video of the crime, but said police assume more than one person was involved because of the weight of the coin.<br />
The coin has a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on one side and maple leaves on the other. It was produced in limited quantities by the Royal Canadian Mint to promote a new line of its Gold Maple Leaf bullion coins in 2007.<br />
It has been on display at the Bode Museum, on Berlin's Museum Island, since December 2010.<br />
Berlin museums spokesman Markus Farr said the coin is on loan from a private collection, but would not elaborate. Detectives specialized in art-related crimes are investigating the theft.

The Nigeria Customs Service on Tuesday disclosed that it had intercepted truckloads of smuggled drugs worth over N242 .6 m, whose importation was highly prohibited .<br />
The drugs identified as Tramadol Hydrochloride and Tramadol and Really Extra tablets in the range of 225 mg / 200 mg were seized along the Lagos -Ibadan Expressway and Apapa Road , Lagos .<br />
According to the Comptroller General of Customs , Col . Hameed Ali ( Retd ), the drugs were concealed in 5,056 cartons, parked in two trucks on two units of 40 - foot containers.<br />
He stated that the drugs were prohibited and not good for consumption without prescription , noting that they bore no evidence of registration from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control and were marked “produced for export . ”<br />
The Customs boss said that investigations were ongoing to unravel the involvement of NCS personnel in the clearing of the consignment.<br />
He said the importers and the Customs operative who colluded with them to allow the dangerous drugs enter into the country had not been arrested.<br />
‘’This drug is prohibited and not good for consumption without prescription . A lot of women and youths now take it to relieve stress , but it is harmful to health if taken outside medical guidance ,” Ali said .<br />
He added that the Customs would intensify its battle against smuggling and would continue to prevent prohibited items from entering the Nigerian market in order to safeguard the economy and health of the citizens .<br />
In 2016, the Federal Operations Unit Zone A of the NCS, evacuated 773 cartons of Tramadol capsules in 225 mg and 700 mg from an unnamed warehouse in Lagos , with a suspect still facing trial at the Federal High Court in Lagos .<br />
Some of the side effects of the drug, according to medical sources , are agitation, nervousness , anxiety, seizures ( convulsions ), skin rash , dizziness and spinning sensation.<br />
Ali added that the seized drugs were capable of increasing criminal activities and economic waste, and that their importation had a negative impact on local production and employment.

Donald Trump is $1 billion poorer since becoming president, according to Forbes latest list of the world's billionaires.<br />
The magazine's newest ranking estimated that Trump's net worth has fallen from $4.5 billion last year to $3.5 billion today, dropping him 220 spots on the magazine's list of billionaires, from No. 336 last year to No. 544.<br />
Although Trump resigned from his businesses when he entered office, his slide isn't due to his having sold any of his businesses because he still owns them.<br />
Rather, Trump's net worth is down because about 40 percent of his wealth comes from real estate he owns in midtown Manhattan, including Trump Tower and eight other buildings within about a mile.<br />
"Midtown Manhattan real estate is down; therefore, so is Donald Trump's fortune," the magazine said in a statement.<br />
Trump has disputed Forbes' estimates in the past, particularly regarding the worth of his brand which -- unlike real estate -- is more difficult to value. During the campaign he said that he was worth $8.7 billion and said last year in a personal financial disclosure form filed with the federal government that his net worth was "in excess of $10 billion."<br />
According to its methodology, Forbes bases its billionaires list on a "snapshot of wealth" taken on Feb. 17 by valuing assets using stock prices and international exchange rates. It acknowledges some fortunes may have changed considerably even since then and that sorting out one's net worth is more complex when it is tied to a family fortune.<br />
"We list individuals rather than multigenerational families who share large fortunes, though we include wealth belonging to a billionaire's spouse and children if that person is the founder of the fortune," the magazine says.<br />
All told, Forbes said it was a record year to be rich, as the number of billionaires it counted climbed 13 percent to 2,043 from 1,810 last year. The magazine attributed the rise in part to surging stock markets and higher commodity prices.<br />
Microsoft founder Bill Gates leads the list for the fourth year in a row, with a fortune of $86 billion, $11 billion more than last year. Investor Warren Buffett claimed the number two spot and Amazon chief executive Jeffrey P. Bezos was third. (Bezos owns The Washington Post).<br />
Forbes has tracked Trump's net worth since 1982 and last year he attained a personal high on the list with a ranking of 121. But since then Midtown New York real estate values have been sliding, which is a large chunk of his fortune.<br />
A recent breakdown of the president's wealth valued his New York City real estate at $1.7 billion, his real estate outside New York at $630 million, his golf clubs at $620 million, his cash and personal assets at $270 million, and his brand businesses at $230 million.<br />
As the New York's real estate market has slowed, Forbes began downgrading Trump's net value last year, saying in October that his net worth was down to $3.7 billion.<br />
Forbes isn't the only publication tracking Trump's wealth to conclude that he is likely worth much less than he says he is. Fortune and Bloomberg have previously offered their own lower estimates.

Libyan authorities on Thursday flew a total of 159 Nigerian migrants stranded in Libya, in the second voluntary repatriation operation. This comes after 162 stranded Nigerians whose bid were to travel to Europe from Libya were all flown back to Nigeria last month. President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday directed the Minister of Finance, Mrs . Kemi Adeosun, and the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, to immediately release the second tranche of the London - Paris Club loan refund to states.<br />
He said the presidential order should be carried out “appropriately and with dispatch. ”<br />
The President , who returned to the country on Friday from his 49 -day medical vacation , also turned down advice by state governors to take more rest .<br />
Buhari said he would not take any further rest until he had addressed all issues affecting Nigerians .<br />
According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity , Garba Shehu, the President spoke while addressing a meeting of the National Economic Council at the Presidential Villa, Abuja .<br />
The council , which is made up of state governors, is chaired by Vice -President Yemi Osinbajo .<br />
Buhari, who had earlier released the first tranche of N388 bn to the state governments in December 2016, said the latest release was meant to ease their financial hardship .<br />
He stressed the need for the state governors to ensure the settlement of unpaid salaries and pension arrears of their workers with the funds .<br />
“I will not rest until I address those issues that affect our people .<br />
“One of these basic things is the issue of salaries . It is most important that workers are able to feed their families, pay rent and school fees , then other things can follow, ” the President was quoted to have said .<br />
He, however , thanked the governors for their display of “love and respect ” for him.<br />
Buhari said he was overwhelmed by his recent experience in which states, irrespective of political differences, charged their citizens to pray in mosques and churches for his well- being.<br />
He apologised to the governors for barring them from visiting him while he was in London .<br />
“I didn’t want government to move to London . I wanted it to remain here and I am glad it did,” he said .<br />
After narrating what he went through while on that vacation, Buhari noted the suggestion by the governors for him to take more rest , but insisted that he would remain relentless in the pursuit of the interest of the Nigerian people at all times.<br />
This , according to him, was the only way to show his gratitude to the people who , he said , “had given so much to me. I was overwhelmed by the celebration of my return all across the country .”<br />
The Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, Abdul- Aziz Yari of Zamfara State , assured the President , on behalf of his colleagues , that they would continue to support his policies and actions which they had adjudged as being in the nation’s best interest .<br />
The governors of Imo, Akwa - Ibom , Osun and Abia states thanked the President for saving the day for the states through the first tranche of the London -Paris Club loan refunds .<br />
They , however , called for the immediate release of the second one .<br />
They also commended the trust the President reposed in Osinbajo , whom they said did not disappoint when he acted as President .<br />
Buhari had arrived the venue of the meeting chaired by Osinbajo at about 12 . 30pm while it was already underway.<br />
He went round the hall to shake hands with the state governors and deputy governors standing in for their governors one after the other .<br />
The governors also presented the President with a “get-well” card which they all signed.

A fire outbreak at the Internally Displaced Persons’ camp in Borno State has claimed three lives and left six other persons injured, the National Emergency Management Authority has revealed.<br />
The agency , in a statement by its Information Officer, North-East zone , Maiduguri, Abdulkadir Ibrahim , revealed that the fire incident started from the kitchen section of the camp.<br />
Ibrahim said the incident occurred at the College of Business Administration , Konduga , which presently houses 6,213 displaced persons .<br />
He said the fire , which gutted a part of the camp, started at about 10: 40 am on Thursday .<br />
He said immediately the fire was noticed , the emergency response team of NEMA was sent to the scene to quench the fire .<br />
Speaking to our correspondent on the telephone, the Chairman of Borno State Emergency Management Agency , Ahmed Satomi, described the fire incident as unfortunate .<br />
He said , “We have to put structures in place to ensure that such an incident does not occur at the Konduga camp and at any other of our camps .”<br />
Satomi, who spoke to our correspondent at about 5:15pm , on Thursday , said he just returned from Konduga to the state capital , Maiduguri, to transport food and other relief materials for the use of those at the camp.<br />
He said , “I am on my way to Konduga to take relief materials, foods and beddings to the displaced persons at the camp as the fire incident affected their foods and their hostel. ”

At least 700 people have died from malaria in Burundi so far this year, with 1.8 million infections registered in the rising epidemic, the health minister said.<br />
Burundi faces a malaria epidemic,' Josiane Nijimbere said Monday , commenting on a World Health Organization (WHO) report.<br />
From January 1 to March 10 this year, 1.8 million infections were registered in Burundi, according to the WHO.<br />
According to Nijimbere, the latest figures constitute a 17 percent increase from the same period last year.<br />
'Some 700 deaths' have been registered since January, the minister added.<br />
In 2016, an estimated 8.2 million people were infected and 3,000 people died in mountainous Burundi, which is home to around 11 million people.<br />
UN officials and medical sources say Burundi's stock of anti-malaria medication is nearly empty.<br />
